Easter Island is a small 63-square-mile patch of land more than a thousand miles from the next inhabited spot in the Pacific Ocean. Around the year 1200 , a small group of Polynesians made their way there. When they arrived, the island was covered with almost 16 million trees, some towering 100 feet high. The palm trees provided coconuts for food and palm leaves for shade and shelter.
They practiced slash-and-burn agriculture, like we do with most of our forests today. They burned down trees, and began to multiply. Pretty soon the island had too many people, too few trees, and then, in only a few generations, no trees at all. Jared Diamond describes their actions in his book, Collapse, and says he wonders what the person who cut down the last of the tree providing them life was thinking.
